Review: Lenovo Vibe K5 smartphone [vídeo]

Currently owner of the Motorola brand, Lenovo is already operating in the Brazilian smartphone market with the Vibe A7010. This device was officially launched in December 2015 and arrived as a great mid-range option with good settings, offering premium audio and an integrated fingerprint sensor. Now, the Chinese company is offering its second device to the Brazilian public.

The Vibe K5 is a device that has technical specifications similar to those of Lenovo’s first smartphone, but comes with some important differences. The first is the absence of the sensor for reading fingerprints. Another distinction is the design with a metallic finish, which makes the new device convey a sense of elegance. Quality audio, decent cameras, and good performance have been maintained on this device.

Viral Vinny had the opportunity to test this smartphone for a few days and unravel all its features. Abroad, the same variant that will be distributed here is called Vibe K5 Plus. Outside, the K5 brings simpler technical specifications, such as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 415 chipset. Check out what we think of the Lenovo Vibe K5 (reference model: A6020l36). Is it worth investing your money in this device?

design

Lenovo’s second smartphone launched here in Brazil features the same sober design as its brother made available before, the Vibe A7010. The K5 has very striking straight lines and slightly curved back edges, which ensures a firm grip while using the device.

The aluminum finish used in the construction of the Vibe K5 shows that Lenovo wants to win over consumers looking for a more elegant look. No plastic taking care of the entire housing, although polycarbonate is also present in some parts of the device.

In this smartphone, Lenovo bets on non-backlit capacitive buttons located at the base of the device, offering greater use of the screen. However, these triggers have an inverted position, which can cause some strangeness for those who are used to the Android standard.

The back cover is removable, revealing the battery – which can also be replaced – and the slots for the chips and memory card. Overall, we can say that the K5 makes a good impression in the visual aspect, conveying the feeling that this is a robust and quite resistant model.

Screen

The K5’s Full HD resolution screen (1920×1080 pixels) is capable of delivering pretty decent images. However, the color reproduction is not very faithful, which is quite noticeable in the wallpapers offered by Lenovo. Contrast and image definition were not very pleasing in our review either.

The brightness, on the other hand, is quite intense and guarantees a good view of the display even in strong light. This feature is ideal for those who usually use their smartphone in the sun, reading in well-lit environments. The Vibe K5 even comes ready for virtual reality, offering a split-screen mode. However, this can only be taken advantage of with the proper equipment.

Interface

In Vibe K5, Lenovo bets on its own interface based on Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop) called Vibe UI. The system brings some important changes, such as the absence of the application tray and a more complete notification bar. Lenovo has not confirmed, but it is very likely that this model will receive the update to Marshmallow, which should happen with the A7010 soon.

For those who prefer the pure Google OS experience, the K5 also comes with the official Google Launcher installed. In total, Lenovo’s interface takes up 4.93GB of the available 16GB. In our tests, the system ran smoothly most of the time, which was only interrupted by the occasional stutter.

Performance

Equipped with a competent processor – the Qualcomm Snapdragon 616, octa-core 1.5 GHz – the Vibe K5 managed to withstand most activities imposed during our tests. When running heavy games like Real Racing 3, GTA San Andreas and Mortal Kombat X, we noticed a slight drop in the reproduction of frames per second.

However, this did not happen in the case of basic games and apps, such as social networks, messengers and news applications, since the smartphone managed to run everything very smoothly. Applications opened simultaneously were also very well managed by the 2 GB of system memory. The Vibe K5 also has 16 GB of internal storage, which can be expanded up to 32 GB using a micro SD card.

Camera

The 13-megapixel camera on this Lenovo smartphone did well in our tests. The photos produced have good color fidelity, white balance and sharpness. The K5 still has several capture modes, but the camera software is confusing and doesn’t present its functions in an intuitive way. The 5-megapixel front camera is also of good quality, offering a beautification mode and gesture capture.

Drums

Although it has a good capacity – 2,750 mAh – the K5’s battery did not surprise us in our review. Using the device moderately, the smartphone reached the end of a day with just under 10% charge. However, consumers can choose to carry an extra battery, as the K5 allows the replacement of this component.

Moderate use (social media, calls, messengers and games): 11 hours Heavy use (games, high resolution videos and camera use): 8 hours and 40 minutes Stress test: 6 hours and 25 minutes

audio

As with the A7010, the K5 also stands out for its sound quality. Dolby Atmos technology combined with stereo speakers ensures a good experience when playing music or videos. The beautiful headphones that come with the set also offer good sound quality.

It is worth it?

The arrival of Lenovo’s second smartphone in the country shows that the manufacturer is targeting the average consumer and targeting the cost-benefit aspect. The Vibe K5 is a device that delivers a good experience, rivaling other strong models on the market, such as Motorola Moto G, Quantum GO and LG K10.

Taking these competitors into account, we can assume that the Vibe K5 is a good option. Considering its launch price – R$ 999 –, it is worth betting on this smartphone and taking home a device with a metallic finish, good performance and above-average audio. During the review period, we were able to find this device costing BRL 899, a very attractive price considering some competitors.

However, if the Vibe A7010 has an equally competitive price – as in promotions where the price approaches R$ 1 thousand –, it is worth considering Lenovo’s first smartphone in the national territory. This model stands out because of the fingerprint reader and better quality audio.
